new 134,000 SF Salk Middle School a school that emphasizes the sensitivity and respect for the middle school student and the surrounding residential neighborhoods. Striving to strike the appropriate balance between elementary schools and high schools recently completed within the school district, scale and flexibility are primary design principles to ensure the school remains relevant for evolving educational delivery for many decades. Replacing the original 1961 school, the new middle school was constructed in two phases to allow the existing school to remain in operation, the first phase was the gym and fitness facility completed in 2014.

Mandated requirements for ADA compliancy and demand from an aging population, is creating a growing need for barrier-free bathrooms. Today’s ADA compliant bathroom no longer has to be utilitarian or “institutional” in its design. Design options are enhanced through the use of tile and innovative construction methods. The result is beautiful bathrooms that also adhere to ADA standards for accessible design. This seminar will examine ways in which barrier-free environments can be customized to include various design elements while remaining ADA compliant. This seminar will also address why bonded waterproofing technology lends itself to the construction requirements of barrier-free design.

Designing Livable Cities presented by Ferd Johns, FAIA

                                   Spokane Convention Center
Earn 1 AIA LU Credit Hours

AIA Spokane is the sponsor of this lunch presentation.  Join us for a presentation by Ferd Johns, FAIA where he suggests that thoughtful and sensitive design decisions at every level are required to make a city truly livable. In his presentation Ferd will cover:
  • How letting market forces, big corporations and starchitects make all of the decisions about how our cities grow and develop, can result in a very unlivable city.
  • Why the "big ideas" that shape the basic plan of a city can fit or fight nature, purpose and culture, but without thoughtful people-centered design throughout the entire process, the best conceptual plan will not produce a truly livable city.
  • The role good design decisions play in respecting and celebrating the patterns of life, and enhance the fine grain of the architecture and furniture of our best cities.
  • These decisions must be based on enduring principles important to the people who live there, and not merely on fashion or style, in order for a truly livable city to emerge.

Riverfront Park is a Spokane treasure, the center of the city and the heart of the region. The park is and has always been sacred and important to the Spokane Tribe, the birthplace of our modern city, the home of Expo '74 and then reshaped into the park we know today. 40+ years after hosting the Expo, this much-loved regional center is again ready to be reimagined as an ever more vibrant and sustainable park. Parks staff and designers will share both the planning process and vision that is reshaping the park. Guy Michaelsen, Principal with Berger Partnership will present.

*   Participants will learn how this site in the heart of Spokane is emblematic of the city's cycles of bold civic planning and civic growth.

  *   Participants will see realized design strategies for integrating surgical interventions into exiting projects while maintaining the existing character and treasured amenities.
  *   Participants will learn the complex challenges of reimagining unique park facilities (many relics of the park's Expo past) and atypical program elements into new sustainable park features.
  *   Participants will learn how the park will act as a gateway between the heart of downtown and the cities northside amenities.
