The 2004 Design Awards Program culminated at the end of September with the Presentation of Awards at the Museum of Arts and Culture. Of the twenty-two entries from ten architectural firms, the jury selected six projects they deemed worthy of recognition.
The jurors were: Carlos Jimenez, Principal, Carlos Jimenez Studio, Associate Professor at Rice University School of Architecture, Houston, Texas; Evett Ruffcorn, FAIA, Principal, ZGF, Seattle, Washington; Elizabeth Wright Ingraham, FAIA, Principal, Elizabeth Wright Ingraham Architects, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The 2004 Design Awards Program committee was chaired by Sam Nystrom, AIA, Denny Christenson Associates. Committee members included Klint Fisher, AIA, Melissa McFadgen, AIA, and David Edwards, AIA.
Comments from jurors e mailed to the committee after the program included, "The work that we awarded represents a high caliber of design, acute in its reading of program and formal intention. I was particularly impressed by the urban finesse of the main awarded project (Spokesman-Review Production Facility)... a true intervention in the city, one which raises the quality of urban life in Spokane." "I thought the general run of submissions was above average ... we picked the correct Honor Award (after seeing the Spokesman-Review Production Facility the next day) ... I did come back to Colorado praising the urban look of Spokane compared to our sprawl and village look".
