HIRING AN ARCHITECT

HOW TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT
In order to become a licensed architect, one must complete the education, experience, and examination requirements mandated by their jurisdiction (typically a state licensing board). Most states require candidates for licensure to have a degree in architecture from a NAAB accredited professional program, to have completed the NCARB’s Intern Development Program, and to successfully pass the NCARB’s Architect Registration Exam”.

The American Institute of Architects is a federalist, or “tiered”, organizational structure with a national organization working collaboratively with the region level, and the state and local components. AIA Spokane is within the Northwest & Pacific Region, which covers Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and AIA chapters in Japan and Hong Kong. In Washington state, the state level component (AIA Washington Council) is primarily focused on advocating for issues affecting architects in the state legislature in Olympia.
